Public Access Preserve

18.14 acres

Funded by the Charleston County Greenbelt Program, State Historic Preservation Office, Johanna-Favrot Fund for Historic Preservation, and individual donations

Part of the first land grant on Edisto Island to Paul Grimball, the site of the Clark Plantation manor, and morerecently the home of the Hutchinson family, this property is steeped in historical significance. The Edisto Island Open Land Trust bought this property to protect its historical values, in addition to conserving the land. Planted and farmed from the early days of Edisto’s plantation economy through the late 20th century, the land now lies fallow today but is protected from development. The historic Hutchinson House has been saved from demolition and the Edisto Island Open Land Trust is in the early stages of restoring the house, creating a community gathering place, and providing educational resources to celebrate and learn more about our cultural heritage. Stop into our parking area to view the restoration progress and read about the house on our interpretive signage.
